Tiles Project-Walk for Reconcilliation

This project is based on engaging children in a short lesson which touches on residential school history and encourages children to envision a future free of discrimination. Children reflect upon what they have learned through the decoration of small wooden tiles that will be provided as gifts to those 50,000 people who will be walking in September’s Walk for Reconciliation event in Vancouver.

By receiving the tiles, participants accept the responsibility to carry forward the message of reconciliation into their lives and their communities. This gifting is consistent with the custom in certain First Nations cultures to share a gift with witnesses to an important ceremony.  

The lesson takes from 30-60 minutes to deliver and can be adapted to suit organizations’ preferences and different age groups. Reconciliation Canada provides organizations with all necessary materials, including the tiles and copies of the book “When I was Eight” (http://www.annickpress.com/When-I-Was-Eight), if necessary.
