Harvest Box Program

Thanks to a partnership between the  New Westminster Community Food Action Committee, New Westminster Parks, Culture and Recreation, School District No. 40 (New Westminster) and Help on Wheels our community will soon be benefiting from a Harvest Box program. The program was developed to encourage healthy eating, educate people on the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables daily, and support local BC farms. It is a program for anyone who wants to purchase fresh fruit and produce at affordable prices!

Starting today you can call or walk in to Century House (620 8th Street / 604.519.1066), Centennial Community Centre (65 E 6th Street/ 604.777.5100) or Queensborough Community Centre (920 Ewen Ave / 604.525.7388) and place your Harvest Box order.

Three varieties are avalable:

1. Harvest Value Box for $8 – features a variety of fruits and vegetables and has been designed to make eating fruits and vegetables more affordable.

2. Harvest Local Box for $15 – features local BC fruit and veggies – supporting local growers and sustainable agricultural methods.

3. Harvest BOGO Box for $15 – Buy One, Give One! You get a Harvest Value Box and another one is donated to an individual or family in need in the community.

Harvest Box Depot Days will be the 2nd and last Thursday of the month starting November 14th.

Orders for Harvest Boxes will need to be received by 4:30 pm the previous Thursday – so our first order deadline is November 7th at 4:30.

Harvest Box Depots (where you can pick your Harvest Box up) will be located at: Century House (620 8th Street), Centennial Community Centre (65 E 6th Street), Queensborough Community Centre  (920 Ewen Ave) and Lord Kelvin School (Community HUB portable at the back of the school on 7th Ave).

In the Know: The Surprising Steps to Collaboration: Nov 13th

Last month FORCE filled the Community Room at Byrne Creek with 20 parents and watched Lynn Miller present a webinar on Anxiety. We had an incredibly inspiring support circle. Thank you to all of you who shared this evening of courage, ideas, and compassion! You can view the Anxiety webinar here.

Next Wednesday November 13th is the next Monthly In The Know session for parents at Byrne Creek! Force ‘in the know’- Burnaby-New West Minister – Nov 2013

We are excited about our webinar focusing on how to get the most out of meetings. The FORCE knows when we parents collaborate peacefully with clear goals in mind, our kids are better serviced. After viewing the webinar together we will follow up with a parent circle of support.

Fall & Winter Fun in New West

Funny group of children are lying in the snow.

By Nancy Duarte

It is true; summer has come to an end but before you pull out the Fall TV Guide and plunk yourself in front the tube, know that the City of New Westminster has you and your family covered for plenty of fun fall and winter experiences to keep your family active.

 Sports Day in New West

Sponsored by the Early Childhood Committee of New Westminster and the New Westminster Middle Childhood Development Committee, this family event will offer plenty of opportunities for children 12 years and under to try various sports activities. Be sure to check out The Tumblebus, a gym on wheels providing a fun way for children to incorporate fitness in a non-competitive atmosphere.  Local talent from minor sports teams will also be there to demonstrate skills.

The event takes place on November 30th from 2:30 – 4:30 pm at the Centennial Community Centre.

Glenbrook Ravine Park

What’s not to love about a picturesque setting of lush greenery, a forest trail, a pond, falls and flowers? You’d think that you had landed yourself in Snow White’s backyard, when in fact you’ve come upon one of the many jewels in New Westminster, Glenbrook Ravine Park. Bring pooch along with the family for a wilderness adventure.

Stop, Drop & Skate

Living in the Vancouver area, you don’t have to go far to see Canucks fan support. Watching the team maneuver on the ice is one thing, but taking yourself off the bleachers and getting on the ice with your kids is another thing! It’s sure to make for a good night of exercise and laughter.

Drop by Moody Park Arena and have a whirl any day of the week, but keep in mind that Wednesdays are a popular night when entrance to skating is only $1 from 6:30-8 pm.

 Swimming at Canada Games Pool

Though the pool was temporarily shut down for maintenance, Canada Games Pool is open again and ready to be a part of your family memories. Whether it’s facing your fears and jumping off the tall

20 foot diving board, giggling down the long Green Thunder water slide or splashing in one of the 3 pools offered, the options are endless for a fun afternoon. Sunday’s family swim from 11 am-1 pm is only $1!

Nature Walk in Queen’s Park

Fall in love with fall! Walk amidst a mountain of fallen yellow, orange and red leaves and take in the crisp air. It’ll keep you active while taking in the beauty of the season. With 75 acres to explore, the park offers something for everyone including Rainbow Playland, enormous trees and clean and cared for trails.

Walk the New West Quay

The boardwalk at New West Quay is often hustling and bustling with various events and it’s a great place to people watch. When the weather doesn’t cooperate, you can visit the Public River Market and enjoy fresh food and local shops. The area has taken on new life with various improvements including the Westminster Pier Park which has a children’s playground and various seating areas to take on the views of the tugboats travelling along the Fraser River. Not to be forgotten is Quayside Park with a small marine playground complete with great climbing structures to keep your little monkeys busy.
